Fourth industrial revolution

Driven by technological developments, fundamental shifts have taken place in industrial practices and supply networks. This is why people talk about the Fourth industrial revolution Underlying developments include:

• Connectivity
• Cyber-physical systems
• Internet of Things
• Cloud computing
• Artificial intelligence

Traditionally, the digital world of data centers, the physical world of production systems or devices and the personal environment have been strongly separated. However, the above technologies connect them, making every person, system or device a participant in (potentially global) information chains. This results in an acceleration in information exchange, but also in the emergence of new processes and (industrial and logistics) partnerships. It also means that the scope and impact (and also the vulnerability) of individual systems and organisations may increase. This will - expectedly - result in changes of a revolutionary nature.

A few examples of developments are the IoT communication protocol CoAP and connection to industrial systems through Apache PLC4x (both applied in projects here).
